Maria Dew QC has a specialist practice with a focus on employment law, health and safety, medico legal, professional misconduct and human rights. Her practice spans advocacy in the Courts, mediation and instructions as independent counsel in reviews and investigations.

Maria was appointed as Queens Counsel in 2018, and has been a barrister in Auckland since 2000.

Maria has a focus on all areas of employment law, acting for both employers and senior employees including urgent injunctions, disciplinary and grievance actions, independent contractor issues, health and safety, equal pay, privacy and human rights matters. Maria is currently a Council Member with the New Zealand Bar Association and serves as the NZBA President Elect.

Maria also acts in related civil proceedings where disputes arise related to professional misconduct before the Courts and a variety of Tribunals. Currently, Maria serves as a Deputy Chair of the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and an expert panel member on several legal panels.

In recent years, Maria has gained a strong reputation for leading independent investigations and reviews on public matters including:

Maria is also an AMINZ certified mediator, having practised as a mediator and facilitator since 2005. In 2014, she was awarded the New Zealand Law Awards “Mediator of the Year” and in 2019 listed in the New Zealand LawFuel Top 10 Mediators. Maria’s mediation practice spans commercial, construction and employment disputes, including most recently bi-cultural facilitation.
