ORIGINS
From Ancient Crete to the Court of Edmund Spenser
Britomartis — Goddess of Crete
The name Britomart traces its lineage to the ancient Minoan goddess Britomartis (Βριτόμαρτις), worshipped on Crete from at least 1500 BCE. Daughter of Zeus and Carme, Britomartis presided over mountains, hunting, and fishing nets. She was cherished by Artemis and regarded as a protectress of harbours and maritime navigation — with temples positioned on coastlines throughout the Mediterranean. That connection to the sea would prove quietly prophetic.
Spenser’s Britomart — The Knight of Chastity
In 1590, Edmund Spenser reimagined the goddess as Britomart, the Knight of Chastity, in his epic poem The Faerie Queene. The name was constructed deliberately: “Briton” combined with “Mars”, the Roman god of war — evoking a warlike British hero. Disguised in armour, Britomart proved herself the equal of any knight on the field, embodying courage, independence, and integrity. Spenser presented her as an ancestor of Queen Elizabeth I, cementing the name as a symbol of British national identity that would carry across the centuries.
“Courage, independence and integrity — values that have defined the Britomart name from ancient Crete to modern Auckland.”
NAVAL HERITAGE
HMS Britomart and the Survey of Waitematā
The Royal Navy honoured the name’s literary and mythological heritage by commissioning seven ships under the designation HMS Britomart. The vessel most consequential to Auckland’s history was HMS Britomart (1820), a Cherokee-class brig-sloop of 237 tons and 10 guns, launched at Portsmouth on 24 August 1820.
The Cherokee class — designed by Sir Henry Peake — was well suited to hydrographic survey work: compact enough for shallow waters, yet capable of extended ocean voyaging. It was from this class that HMS Beagle later departed, carrying Charles Darwin on his landmark voyage of scientific inquiry.
In 1841, under the command of Captain Owen Stanley, HMS Britomart conducted the first detailed hydrographic survey of Waitematā Harbour. The charts produced were foundational: they mapped depths, contours, and navigational hazards, enabling Auckland to function as New Zealand’s new colonial capital and guiding thousands of vessels safely into port in the decades that followed.
AUCKLAND
Point Britomart — A Place at the Heart of the City
A prominent headland at the water’s edge was named Point Britomart in 1848. The site — known in te reo Māori as Te Rerenga Ora Iti (“the leap of the few survivors”) — had been a significant Māori pā for centuries.
Today, the Britomart precinct in Auckland’s central business district preserves the historic name. Anchored by the heritage transport centre (recently renamed Waitematā Station), the precinct has been transformed into a vibrant hub combining landmark buildings with contemporary commerce — a place that, like the chambers bearing its name, honours the past whilst embracing the future.
